I graduated from the University of Dayton in August, 1958. Less than a month later, at the tender age of 20, I entered the classroom at Cathedral Latin, not knowing what would await me. So you were my first class and I was a "freshman” with you. I can also say you were my favorite class as we proceeded through CL together. My homeroom was 1D and I taught freshman English and religion that year.
My second year I was asked to teach American History to juniors and that resulted in being my main subject through my 12 years of high school teaching. I recd my masters degree at Western Reserve Univ. in 1966 in history.
I have so many good memories at Latin. Certainly, my being assigned to work in the athletic dept with then Bro. Pat Tonry was at the top of the list. Working with the coaches, athletes and managers was very rewarding for me.
In the summer of 1966, I learned the order was transferring me to Purcell High School in Cincinnati. I was devastated. For some reason, I thought I would stay at Latin forever. I was made assistant principal at Purcell, a post I was not prepared for but somehow did it for three years. I must add I enjoyed my time at Purcell but it never matched Latin. In 1969, I decided to leave the order and return to lay life. I moved back to Dayton, my home town, and taught one more year of high school at Alter High School - my first exposure to girls in the classroom - a very different experience from Latin and Purcell.
In 1970, I joined the admission staff at the University of Dayton (my alma mater) as a "roadrunner" visiting high schools all over Ohio trying to recruit students. In 1974, the then Director of Admission, Bro. Ralph Mravintz (who was the AD at Latin before Pat Tonry), left the position and I was offered the Director position. I stayed in that position until my retirement at 2001.
I married Janet Dericks from Cincinnati in 1973 (no I didn't know her when I was in the order). We had two daughters Sarah (1975) and Molly (1978). Jan was a career English teacher. We have been married now 42 years and enjoy our three granddaughters ages 10, 7 and 4. Yes I am surrounded by women.
I have been retired for almost thirteen years and am enjoying this life with grandchildren, taking classes for seniors, volunteering, reading, playing tennis and enjoying many friends I have accumulated over the years.. I have always remained close to my friends from the Marianists. Since 2012 when your class invited me to your 50th reunion, I have been invited and attended each class reunion since then and will once again for the class of 1965. I have thoroughly enjoyed each of these reunions. It has been fun not being recognized by most of you and then reliving our great times together at our beloved CL.I will turn 78 this year, enjoy good health and remain very active. I have been blessed in so many ways over the years. Even though having a family is primary to me, I have never regretted my years as a Marianist, especially those eight years at CL. I send warm greetings to all of you and hope we can reunite at your 55th reunion.
