Reunion Events:
The 1962 Class of Cathedral Latin School had a superb 50-year reunion celebration. On Friday, September 21, 2012, fifty-five graduates of the Class of 1962 met in the NDCL school library for a “tailgate” party prior to that night’s homecoming football game against Erie Central Tech High School. It was a cold and rainy game, but the Lions managed to romp 61 – 21 over the Falcons. On Saturday, September 22, 53 graduates of the Class of 1962 plus a former teacher (Myron Achbach) and a former varsity football coach (Richard Marabito) met again at NDCL for a reunion social hour and banquet. The meal was so expertly prepared that it was impossible to tell that it came from the school cafeteria. On Sunday, September 23, graduates convened at Pleasant Hill Golf Course to celebrate a memorial Mass for their departed classmates followed by a communion breakfast. After that, a memorial golf outing was scheduled for those who chose to brave the pouring rain.

It was an incredible weekend. On Saturday April 23, 2016 the Class of 1962 met at Sterle’s Slovenian Restaurant on East 55th Street for cocktails and dinner. After ample sampling of cocktails, we were served home made noodle soup as an appetizer and family style platters of tossed salad, breaded veal schnitzel, chicken paprikash, cheese pierogi, and mixed green beans and vegetables for dinner with apple strudel for dessert. Following dinner, on behalf of all of us, Tom Ashdown presented John Gibbons with a beautiful inscribed desk/mantle clock, gifted by the Class of 1962, honoring John as the 62nd Latin graduate to receive the Man (Men) of the Year Award since 1957.
The next day April 24 we met at St. John’s Cathedral downtown for 10:30 Mass with the Cathedral Latin Alumni as special guest worshipers. After Mass it was off to The Wyndham Hotel for a breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages, and rolls and more festivities. At the breakfast John was honored as the 2016 Cathedral Latin Man of the Year for his steadfast dedication to the education and spiritual development of young high school men. John gave a beautiful acceptance speech highlighting the many family members, teachers, and tutors, who helped mold his life to inspire young students and athletes to achieve greater personal success.

Cathedral Latin Centennial Celebration 1916 - 2016

It was a spectacular event. Over 300 graduates from all classes, many with their spouses, attended the celebration of Cathedral Latin School first opening its classroom doors in 1916. The venue was loud with the talk and laughter of stories that were told many times before, but were so good that they had to be told again. The list of special speakers was impressive including Bishop Anthony Pilla '51 and Fr. Jim O’Donnell '48 who gave the invocation and benediction respectively. Other speakers gave recollections and tribute to the greatness of Cathedral Latin for its scholarship, athletics, and contributions to religious and public service. The crowd was populated by faces lined by wrinkles of many post graduation years and others who seemed to be only youngsters in comparison. All took part in a great celebration that ended with loud off-key versions of the Alma Mater and Latin Fight Song.
Representing the Class of 1962 at the Centennial Celebration are Albert DiIorio, Tom Ashdown, Neal Brickman, Jim Blaszak, Bob DeSapri, Danny Borovac, Jim Denk, Jerry Ketchaver, and Jim McMahon. The guys are standing in front of the entrance doors and archway that were originally part of CLS and later salvaged when the school was torn down in October, 1981. The structures now reside in the lobby of the W.O. Walker Building near the former school property site at E. 107 St. and Euclid Ave. The guys are also standing behind a commemorative NFL football honoring the 50 years of Super Bowl games played from 1967 to 2016. The football presently resides in a trophy case at NDCL and recognizes 1963 Latin graduate Clinton Jones as a participant in Super Bowl IV (1970).
Friday Night
Sept. 15
Sept. 15
The reunion weekend started off on a beautiful Friday evening with a spirited get-together at Muldoon's where the Class of 1962 and their wives started with a happy hour full of fun and laughter followed by dinner of tavern fare ordered off the menu. The crowd walked in ready for a fun evening, but for some unknown reason, got progressively louder and more rowdy as the event wore on. Who knows but it might have been Danny Borovac who kept everyone entertained with his jocular wit and charisma. We all knew it was going to turn out to be a night of great fun and camaradarie!
Those at Muldoon's on Friday night included: Seated; Pete French, Tom Fahey, Kevin Bynane. Standing 2nd Row; Rich Marrapese, Maureen Ashdown, Marce Mylen, Barb Loughead, Andy Brickman, Neil Brickman, Kaaren McMahon, Jim Kroeger. 3rd Row; Jim Halas, Tom Ashdown, Leo Loughead, Danny Borovac, Dave Komorowski, Jim McMahon, Gayle Galemmo. Back Row; Jim Faflik, Jim Denk, Albert DiIorio, Jerry Ketchaver, Jim Gareau, Rick Myslenski, Matt Galemmo, Matt McNamara.
Marce Mylen ponders as he listens to Tom Ashdown say: "Look, Marce, I never picked up my year book, so when Kevin sets his down I want you to go grab it and meet me at my car." Meanwhile, Pete French tries to listen in on their conspiracy. Unsuspecting of the treachery going on, Kaaren McMahon and Maureen Ashdown try to convince Pat Fahey that their next round of drinks should be doubles. In the back corner, things are heating up as Leo Loughead, Jim Faflik, and Jim Denk debate who's going to pick up the tab.

Shirley Begley hasn't moved a muscle or a strand of hair since the last picture was taken. Jim Faflic accuses Pete French of the whoopie cushion prank. Pete just glares back incredulously. Keven Bynane tells Cas Majcher the old joke about the titter going through the court room. Peggy Bynane tells Kevin to keep it to himself. Mary Jo Mylen nearly falls over backward laughing. Jan French says...."there was no whoopie cushion....just Gibbons splitting the seat of his pants." Vera Croce tells Diana McGrath: "you know... these guys will never grow up." Dan McGrath tells Leo Loughead: "There are a few hairs up there but not enough to comb." Leo says "all I want is enough to have a part." Elaine McNamara asks Maureen Ashdown "Why are men always so juvenile?" Maureen answers: "Nothing you can do. Just accept it". Meanwhile, Ray Paglio and Matt Galemmo play Morra and throw fingers in the back row. Up front, Fr. Pat advises Myron...."You've been sitting like that long enough; why don't you just loosen up?" Neal Brickman looks across the room hoping to attract the attention of the bartender. Bob Sheahean says, "Why am I smelling so much perfume?". Emmett Cooper answers.... "You're right, Bob!! I smell it too. Who did you go out with last night?" Don Zwilling says..."This is so outrageous. Fred would have loved it." Elaine Quinlan whispers "Honey, this is a drag; why don't we cut out and go somewhere else?" John answers, "Sounds good, Let's go" Tom Begley to Jim Denk..."Why do we always end up in the back row?"

MEN OF LATIN NDCL Latin Alumni Event - October 11, 2019 There was an exciting order of events for over 100 graduates of Cathedral Latin School climaxed by a legacy football game between rival Latin Lions and Benedictine Bengals. The evening began with a hearty dinner in McGarry Gymnasium followed by a welcome by NDCL president Dr. Michael Bates who introduced the Brother Nurthen Endowment Initiative to secure $500,000 in new endowment gifts and pledges. Latin alumni then went to view the unveiling of the Legacy Wall which pictorially chronicles the history of Notre Dame Cathedral Latin School. The Wall is a large montage of vintage photos and word accounts of the merger of Notre Dame Academy and Cathedral Latin School. The picture to the right is a prominent feature of the Wall. After a visit to the chapel, alums departed to Lion Stadium to watch the Latin - Benedictine game.

The Communion Breakfast began with Mass at Saint John Cathedral followed by breakfast and the award ceremony at Crown Plaza at Playhouse Square. The Men of the Year were honored along with the Golden Jubilee Classes of 1970 and 1971.
BREAKFAST
Breakfast was an interesting affair with table places set with nice tableware but no coffee cups or saucers. Coffee was available at the door but with no refills offered at the table. Thus, most attendees forewent coffee with breakfast. Orange juice in sealed plastic bottles was set at each place but with no glasses for the orange juice. Some thought that the orange juice was meant to be drunk out of the bottle, while others thought the bottled beverage was meant to be a take-home favor. Otherwise, breakfast was pleasant, overlooking the faux pas. We went on to enjoy very, very, very well-cooked scrambled eggs, home fries with bacon and sausage. Still no coffee. Next Man of the Year affair should be better.

"The Reunion"
“The Reunion” for the Class of 1962 was held the weekend of September 16-18th, 2022.
“The Reunion” began Friday evening September 16 when alumni gathered at the 1867 Steele Mansion B&B in Painesville for cocktails, light snacks and 1962 trivia. On Saturday September 17, “The Reunion” continued with alumni attending either a morning or afternoon 1+1/2 hour guided tour of the 1860s era Painesville Evergreen Cemetery visiting the graves of 19 interesting individuals, among them Medal of Honor recipient Civil War Veteran Sgt Howell B Treat and 1869 transcontinental railroad builder General John S. Casement as well as a tombstone marked “Not Guilty.” Next “The Reunion” continued on Saturday night at the 94-year-old Hellriegel’s Inn in Painesville where alumni experienced a banquet consisting of two chef stations of individually prepared pasta with choice of toppings and individually hand carved roast beef, both of which were supplemented by a salad station. Entertainment that night was provided by violinist, humorist, storyteller Mary Beth Ions. Mary Beth regaled the alumni for over an hour with her vast repertoire of songs, show tunes, classical tunes, as well as stories. Lastly there were trivia questions about 1962 and Cathedral Latin with prizes being bottles of vintage wine from a classmate’s private wine collection.
What an incredible place to have a reunion or any other function.
Absolutely beautifully done everywhere, inside and out.
What an incredible place to have a reunion or any other function.
Absolutely beautifully done everywhere, inside and out.
Steele Mansion was built in 1867 as the home of American lawyer, soldier, and politician George Steele and his family. At that time, the town of Painesville had never seen a home so spectacular! The daily newspaper described the mansion as the grandest home in town, and Steele Mansion earned its name as the “Jewel of Painesville.”
This elegant mansion offers a glimpse into the life of the 19th-century elite. Its French Second Empire-style design was immensely popular during the mid-1850s. Today, Steele Mansion serves as an immaculate example of an architectural style that once took the world by storm.
