Fred Zwilling
--Don Zwilling's response in appreciation
On behalf of my 2 remaining brothers, Joe (Class of 1958) and Ed (Class of 1968), I thank you very much for posthumously providing this diploma to our brother, Fred. At Saturday's Reunion, I was touched by the sincere motives and comments of several members of the Class of 1962. I was not aware that Fred was the first of your classmates to die. In my remarks, I should have mentioned more about Fred's brief life beyond high school, however, Bob did a nice job summarizing and touching on Fred's less than 6 years after Latin. On March 26, 1968, Fred died in an automobile accident in Stuttgart, Germany. Fred was in the passenger seat of a car driven by a friend, who made a left turn at a traffic light, in the path of an oncoming truck. Fred died immediately. Our late father (Frank) and late sister (Diane) flew to Stuttgart for the funeral. Fred is buried in Stuttgart and we have the location of his grave. Needless to say, visiting his grave is on my "bucket list." Also, I will send the diploma to his son, Fred, Jr. On this message, I am copying a few people in attendance on Saturday, for whom I was able to receive email addresses. If you wish to pass this along to other attendees or classmates, feel free to do so. Thanks again for your hospitality and for your sincere deed. Opere et veritate. Don Zwilling Class of 1963 |

Email to Bob Sheahen, Tom Begley, and Jim McMahon from Don Zwilling (Mar 27, 2018)
Good morning Bob, Tom and Jim,
Yesterday, March 26th, I received the quarterly Alumnotes from our beloved Alma Mater. Reading the full page article about Fred was a pleasant surprise, coincidentally on the 50th anniversary of his death.
At your reunion last September, Bob mentioned that Fred brought beer to the Senior Retreat. I don't remember that, or forgot it during the past 5 1/2 decades. And, discovered in the toilet tank? He was obviously trying to keep the beer cool while concealing it. I don't recall that either. I'll have to check with my brothers, Joe and Ed. Thank goodness for Bob Sheahen's excellent memory.
Thanks, again, for your kind act of reconciliation and restoring Fred's diploma, posthumously. You obviously jumped through many hoops to make it happen. And thanks for being the active class that you are in carrying out your activities and memories of Cathedral Latin School.
