Mass of the Resurrection
St. Raphael Church
Bay Village, Ohio

Dear Family and Friends,
We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for joining us today to celebrate Steve's Life.
As many have said, Steve was a very proud "tough guy" - strong as a horse and as tough as nails, but fair, with movie star good looks, a keen intelligence, a sarcastic sense of humor, a fierce work ethic, and a distinctly American brand of self-reliance, mixed with an equally distinct brand of Irish stubbornness. He was his own man, that's for sure! And, like Frank Sinatra, he did it "my way"! He was also a tender and humble man - a loving husband, a devoted father, an inspirational teacher and coach, a loyal friend and mentor, and a man of God. Steve has touched so many lives throughout his journey and we'll miss him dearly. His spirit, his legacy, will live on through all of us.
Again, we thank you for joining us today. Your love, support and prayers are deeply appreciated. We have no doubt that our dear Steve is looking down from heaven right now and yelling out "Ohhh...boy!"
Many Blessings,
The Hogan Family (Linda, Steve, Patrick & Kevin)

The Lion Sleeps Tonight
On June 3, 2017 we paid homage to the memory of Steve Hogan. It was a beautiful summer day at St. Raphael Church in Bay Village, Ohio. Jim Blaszak, Bob DeSapri, Ray Paglio, Jim Denk, Paul Dobritch, Jim McMahon, and John Gibbons, all from the Cathedral Latin Class of 1962, came to remember and honor their beloved departed classmate. We gathered outside the church prior to Mass so that we could walk in and sit together to pray and recollect with that strong Latin Spirit that continues to keep us united.
Father Timothy Gareau, pastor of St Raphael, presided over the service. The service was attended by Steve’s wife Linda, and his grown sons Steve, Patrick, and Kevin along with many friends and relatives.
We sat at the back of the church so much of Father’s eulogy was not well heard or understood. But Father’s message came through very clearly. We had lost a very special person who was exceptional in everything he did: a husband, a father, a provider, a relative, a neighbor, a friend, a fellow classmate. Steve Hogan was among the best.
We came to honor the man who brought us to our feet with his ability on the football field, who learned with us in the classroom, who made us proud being part of Cathedral Latin School, and who took great pleasure in joining us at our high school reunions even when his health was in decline.
We will always remember Steve Hogan as one of our greatest.

Letter from Linda Hogan following 55 Year Reunion:
Dear Gentlemen,
I just want to thank you again for inviting us to the 55th Reunion for the CL Class of '62. Your friendship and support mean more than I can ever express. It was wonderful to hear the many stories that your classmates were eager to share with us, many we heard for the first time. It's so good for our boys to witness the special camaraderie among the men of Latin '62. They really enjoyed meeting and speaking with all of you. You truly are a special group of guys. I especially enjoyed talking and listening to Father Pat and Brother Myron. Father Pat is quite the character with his Irish humor! The Mass made the evening very meaningful and touching. I was glad to meet Don Zwilling, who happens to be a Bay neighbor of mine, who I now know walks by our house all the time.
I knew it was going to be a bittersweet night for us, but I wouldn't have missed it for anything. I know Steve was with us there in spirit.
Thank you again for your continued love and support.
Love,
Linda Hogan & sons Steve, Pat, and Kevin

Steve grew up in the tight knit Slovenian area of E. 66th Street & St. Clair Avenue. He attended St. Philip Neri School, then continued at Cathedral Latin, following his brother, Roger (‘60) and his Dad (‘21). Steve thrived at Latin, especially in athletics, playing football and basketball. Football was where he excelled. From Latin, Steve attended Ohio University for one year before transferring and graduating from Kent State with degrees in history, English, and education. He received a masters in Education Administration from Cleveland State. During college and after, Steve worked at St. Clair Rec. Center teaching swimming and coaching. Teaching at his alma mater, St. Philip Neri School, Steve enjoyed 13 years in the classroom, the last three also serving as principal. During this time in 1970, Steve met his wife, Linda, who lived three blocks away in St. Francis Parish, and was tutoring at St. Philip Neri while attending classes at CSU. They married in 1973. Steve and Linda taught over 33 years combined in the Cleveland Catholic Diocese. When they started a family, Steve left education and worked as a human resource director at Ameritrust and Emerald Health. He also travelled as a human resource and labor consultant for Alpha Associates. They have three sons, Steve, Patrick, and Kevin. Steve went back into teaching for two years at VASJ before becoming Human Resource Director at non-profit, Benjamin Rose Institute. Steve was very well-liked and respected among his students and co-workers for his ability to connect and resolve issues. He was always the dignified professional. Steve never gave up his healthy lifestyle, walking and running 5 miles a day, lifting weights, and eating healthy. He maintained his high school physique of 6'4" and 210 pounds his whole life. He coached all three sons in baseball and basketball. He said, for him, ‘exercise was like breathing’, something he had to do everyday. Unfortunately, the weekend they were moving to Bay Village, in October 2010, Steve suffered a stroke and lost the use of his right side. Because he was the healthiest person they knew, many friends, family, and co-workers had their carotid arteries checked. He continued his fierce competitive spirit by everyday pushing himself to walk. Linda took him daily to a lakefront park in Avon Lake where Steve could hold onto the railing and walk the 400 yards back and forth eight times. Steve worked hard through many years of physical challenges and therapies, yet always kept his winning spirit and sense of humor. His gentlemanly charm, smile, and flirtatious wink won over many a nurse and therapist. Steve’s health slowly declined and on May 29, 2017, Steve passed away. His family will never forget the kindness and support of his classmates from the Cathedral Latin Class of 1962, who made a strong appearance at his Memorial Mass at St. Raphael Church in Bay Village. The outpouring of condolences were a great comfort to the family. You're forever in their hearts and prayers.
