Jim McMahon
After graduating from Latin, I went to Western Reserve University where I earned a Bachelor's degree with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry. I was active in the Student Union and graduated in 1966. After graduation I worked as a research assistant at the Developmental Biology Center while earning a Master’s degree at Case Western Reserve University.
Kaaren Mates (a WRU art major and a 1962 Beaumont graduate) and I met at a homecoming dance in our freshman year, dated throughout college, graduated together, and were married in 1967. In 1971 we moved to Detroit, Michigan where I attended Wayne State University and earned a Ph.D. in biological sciences with a specialty in electron microscopy. In 1979 I was recruited by the Cleveland Clinic and worked there for 34 years until retirement in December of 2013. At the Clinic, I was on Professional Staff in the Department of Anatomic Pathology as Director of Electron Microscopy doing diagnostic electron microscopy specializing in renal pathology, muscle and nerve pathology, tumor pathology, and respiratory lung diseases. I served as a consultant to MetroHealth Hospital (Cleveland), Riverside Hospital (Columbus), Cleveland Clinic Florida (Weston), Dayton Children's Hospital, and King Khalid Medical City (Abu Dhabi, UAE). I have authored and co-authored over 100 scientific publications in major peer-reviewed medical journals and have delivered numerous medical and scientific presentations both nationally and internationally. I was co-investigator of multiple research projects including two funded by the National Institutes of Health. While at the Clinic I also delivered monthly lectures to Clinic residents and fellows on the role of electron microscopy in the ultrastructural identification of human diseases.
Kaaren and I have three children and five grandchildren. We enjoy working on our Cleveland Heights home and listening to opera on our back deck. We both love hearing from our high school classmates. I can be contacted at [email protected].
