Al Mazei
Born in the Old Brooklyn section of Cleveland, went to Benjamin Franklin School, and attended Our Lady of Good Counsel Church. Played a ton of slow pitch and fast pitch, softball at school playgrounds as well as league ball at Brookside Park where Bob Feller, Mike Garcia, and Bob Lemon showed us how to pitch. My Dad showed me how to restore a house as we completely replaced the footer and drain tile, plumbing, electrical wiring, etc. when he wasn’t working at Thompson Products. He designed a new home in Independence and showed me how to draw architectural plans. We moved there in 1958.
I was accepted to CLS and started 10th grade in 1959. The 1 ½ hour bus commute each way was the only bad part of CLS. I enjoyed the challenge of ambitious classmates and knowledgeable teachers. I was disappointed not making the football team, but felt great being voted as Captain of the Track Team and beating Frank Solich in the 100, 220 and 880 relay. Coach Ruvolo timed me in the 100 and said he didn’t know I was that fast. I wish he did!
I went to OSU to study Engineering Physics with a Nuclear Elective and ran Track. I joined the Air Force in 1965 and after accelerated electronics training was stationed at an Active Air Defense Blockhouse in Montgomery AL where I met a beautiful blond blue- eyed southern belle named Sandra Dyess. We married six months later and moved back to Columbus to finish college.
Sandra immediately got a job as Personal Secretary for Woody Hayes. What a blessing! We were heavily involved in Buckeye football and building our future for the next four years.
I also completed my BS in Engineering Physics and Masters in Public Administration with a concentration in Information Systems. For the next 35 years; as a senior executive with CPSI, IRS, USF&G Insurance, CSC Consulting, Ernst & Young, PricewaterhouseCoopers, AMS, and the State of Alabama; I was involved in all aspects of Management Consulting and Information Technology including managing a $300+ million budget and 1,000+ staff. My experience included a background in government, healthcare, financial, insurance, telecommunications, manufacturing, and energy industries.
I then had an opportunity to start my own firm, eVET Solutions, Inc. ( www.evets.us ) and fortunately won a large government IT systems integration sub-contract. Now in our sixth year, we continue to win long term contracts. It remains interesting and too much fun to retire.
Sandra and I have two daughters and three fantastic grandchildren.
