Marty Powers

Martin Powers passed away April 26, 2003 after a second bout with cancer. Marty attended Cathedral Latin from St. Mary in Painesville from 1958 to 1960 when at the age of 16, he joined the Society of Mary. He obtained a B.S. in Theology and Philosophy from the University of Dayton. He left the Marianists in 1964 to study for the priesthood at the White Fathers Seminary in Le Ruy, France. In June 1969 at St. Mary Church he was ordained a priest with the White Fathers Missionaries of Africa by Cleveland Auxiliary Bishop William Cosgrove. As a White Father, Martin earned a M.S. in Psychological Counseling at Chicago’s Loyola university. He traveled extensively in the US and abroad.
Marty was assigned to Chicago’s Cabrini Green projects as a mental health
counselor and served in numerous other positions until he was appointed by Mayor Richard M. Daley as the
Administrative Director of the Board of Mental Health for the City of Chicago. Marty left the priesthood in 1974 but continued in that position until 1979. He next served as the Administrative Director’s Assistant at the University of Illinois School of Medicine from 1979 to 1985, when he then started his own business as financial advisor and consultant and continued in the capacity until his retirement in 2002.
